Protecting your Smile

Scaling and Polishing

Even for those with the best oral hygiene practices (including dentists!), bacteria can still build up on tooth surfaces. These bacteria accumulate and form a soft layer on your teeth which is known as plaque. Over time, minerals in your saliva cause plaque to harden and create a tough build-up around your gums called tartar or calculus. Plaque and calculus are responsible for many dental diseases such as decay and gum disease.

In today’s stressful world, many of us rely on drinks such as red wine, coffee and tea to keep us going. Unfortunately, these drinks frequently result in stains on our teeth which can cause unsightly discolouration to your smiles.

At SSD, we use a combination of ultrasonic and hand scalers to gently but effectively remove calculus around the gum line. This is followed with polishing with our delightfully flavoured polishing paste to remove plaque and stains. If necessary, air-flow polishing jets are then used to remove any stubborn or tough-to-reach stains that may remain.

Following a thorough cleaning, your teeth will be at their best state for us to check for issues such as cavities or leaking fillings which were previously hidden under the buildup.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a mineral which can help to reinforce tooth enamel and can help in preventing dental decay or slow down its progression. It can even help to reverse very early dental decay and prevent the need for a filling!

At SSD, we apply topical fluoride varnishes or gels where appropriate to delay or stop decay progression in higher-risk individuals or teeth.

Mouthguards and Sports Guards

Mouthguards are removable appliances which are worn over your upper and/or lower teeth and they protect your teeth against excessive forces. These forces may arise from grinding or clenching your teeth or from playing high-impact sports. They are effective in bracing against the impacts, reducing the risk of cracks, fractures and wear and tear of your teeth.

At SSD, our mouthguards are custom fitted to your teeth to ensure a snug fit which allows for best efficacy and comfort.
